MoBSE Gambia Reaffirms Commitment to Transparent Teacher Scholarships and Education Reform

MoBSE Gambia Reaffirms Commitment to Transparent Teacher Scholarships and Education Reform. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Gambia wishes to address recent concerns and discussions circulating regarding the availability of scholarships. We believe it is important to provide clarity and transparency to the public about our ongoing efforts to ensure a fair and organized system that supports both our teachers and students.

It has come to the Ministry’s attention that some teachers have been leaving their duty posts without proper authorization to pursue higher education opportunities. In fact, there are cases where teachers abandon their classes or do not give the students the attention they deserve, which is at the detriment of their students and the Ministry. Such unorganized and indiscriminate actions undermine the quality of education and the trust placed in the teaching profession.

The Ministry is fully aware of these challenges, and the current education reforms under implementation are designed specifically to address these issues decisively. While it is recognized that these corrective measures may meet resistance from individuals who have, in the past, exploited loopholes or “cheated the system,” we assure the public that MoBSE is committed to addressing these matters once and for all.

Please note that at the core of our reforms, is a strong emphasis on uplifting and empowering teachers. MoBSE remains dedicated to supporting deserving teachers by providing scholarships, training, and professional development opportunities that enhance their skills and capacity to deliver quality education. These opportunities will be awarded strictly based on merit and in a transparent and equitable manner, without any hindrance or favoritism.

We understand that meaningful change often faces opposition; however, we call on every genuine Gambian who cares about the future of our nation and the well-being of our children to appreciate the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining full sector control and sustainable teacher management. This is essential to prevent abuse, ensure accountability, and guarantee that our education system serves the best interests of all students and communities.

MoBSE will continue to work diligently with education stakeholders to nurture an environment where teachers are supported professionally, students receive uninterrupted learning, and the entire sector is positioned for sustainable growth and excellence.
We thank the public, parents, teachers, and all partners for their continued understanding and cooperation as we strengthen the education sector for the benefit of every Gambian child.
