Minister Kabwila praises NCHE for promoting the education sector – In her first familiarisation tour of her duties, Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Jessie Kabwila on Tuesday visited the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) headquarters in Lilongwe.
Upon arrival, Dr. Kabwira, was taken on a tour of offices at the institution before proceeding to the boardroom where she met both the Council and the senior management team of NCHE.
In her remarks, Dr. Kabwila said she started her tour of duties with NCHE knowing the institution is the spinal cord of the higher education sector as it ensures quality which is key in the country’s attainment of the Malawi 2063 Vision.
“The Ministry values NCHE, as an important arm. Without investing in NCHE, there is no quality and efficiency in the higher education sub-sector,” she said.
After going through NCHE’s presentation, the minister was impressed with the commitment shown by the NCHE council and staff which has necessitated the institution to attain milestones.
She emphasised that the state President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera is committed to ensuring quality higher education in the country where papers given graduates should be at par with skills and knowledge attained by them.
“Malawi’s academic credentials should stand the test of time, and together, let us run a higher education that leaves a legacy,” she emphasised, while assuring her total support as Minister of Higher Education.
Speaking earlier, NCHE Board Chair, Professor Eston Sambo appreciated the support which the institution has been receiving from the Ministry of Education to accomplish their missions.
Among the milestones attained, he cited digitalisation of their system which is now at 100 percent leading to efficiency and harmonisation of public university selection which this year included Domasi and Nalikule College of Education.
He said NCHE remains committed to ensuring a resilient and self-sustaining Higher Education system.
The Minister was accompanied by Secretary for Education, Associate Professor Mangani Chilala Katundu and the Director of Higher Education, Dr Levis Eneya among other senior officials.
