HESLGB Malawi Engages Faith Leaders to Boost Loan Repayment Awareness

In todays latest HESLGB News – HESLGB Malawi Engages Faith Leaders to Boost Loan Repayment Awareness. The Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) Malawi has begun engaging religious leaders across the country as part of its efforts to improve loan recovery and extend support to needy students.

The approach, according to the Board, taps into the influence faith leaders have over their congregations, most of whom gather weekly for worship services. This makes religious platforms a strategic avenue for spreading loan repayment messages.

Speaking in an interview, HESLGB Director of Loans Recovery, Paul Padambo said the initiative is expected to yield positive results, as congregants often act on guidance from their spiritual leaders.

“People trust and follow what their religious leaders say. Sharing loan repayment messages through them, we believe former beneficiaries will take the message seriously and act on it,” he said.

Padambo emphasized that repaying the loan is a responsibility, not an option, noting that the fund is designed to revolve and benefit future students.

“It is a revolving fund, those who benefitted did so because others repaid their loans. For the system to continue supporting needy students, past beneficiaries must honour their obligation,” he added.

One of the faith leaders involved in the campaign, Reverend Vasco Kachipapa, General Secretary of the CCAP Nkhoma Synod welcomed the collaboration and pledged his support.

“This is an important initiative. It aligns with our values, and we are ready to work with HESLGB. Nkhoma University is among the institutions that benefits from the fund, so we fully support efforts that sustain the fund,” said Kachipapa.

So far, meetings have been conducted with the Anglican Diocese of Northern Malawi and CCAP Nkhoma Synod in the Central Region. HESLGB says the initiative will be rolled out to all regions in the coming months.
