Botswana Examinations Council 2024 Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE) Results Released – Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2024 Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) Results. A total of 45 284 candidates sat for the examination showing an increase of 1.18% in candidature compared to 44 750 candidates in 2023.

There were 22 278 (49.2%) male candidates and 22 977 (50.8%) female candidates sitting for the 2024 Junior Certificate Examination.

The grades available at syllabus level are on a pass scale of A – E where Grades A to C are credit grades and D to E are pass grades. At qualification level the grades available are Merit, A, B, C, D and E.

Candidates failing to meet the minimum requirements for the lowest grade (E) at both syllabus and qualification levels are unclassified and assigned letter U. In contrast, candidates who did not meet the requirements of grading at component level are assigned letter X at syllabus and/or at qualification level.

Overall performance of Government schools only: The results for the 2024 JCE cohort indicate that the proportion of candidates obtaining credit grades (Grades C or better) is at 38.57% compared to 37.10% in 2023, indicating an improvement of 1.47%.

The proportion of candidates obtaining pass grades (Grades E or better) is at 85.54% compared to 83.10% in 2023, indicating a significant improvement of 2.44%. It is therefore, concluded that the performance of 2024 Government school candidates has improved significantly compared to that of 2023.

Performance for all 2024 JCE candidates (that is both government and private candidates) indicates that the proportion of candidates obtaining credit passes (Grade C or better) is at 36.28% compared to 34.24% in 2023, showing a significant improvement of 2.04%.

Whereas the proportion of candidates obtaining grades (Grade E or better) is at 81.66% compared to 77.79% in 2023 which signifies a significant improvement of 3.84% from the previous year.

The pass rate for the 2024 cohort is 81.66%.

Outstanding performance has been noted where 16 (sixteen) candidates obtained a Merit in 2024 compared to eight (8) in 2023. The 16 (sixteen) candidates are spread around 15 (fifteen) different examination centres across the country. Two (2) candidates obtained Straight A’s in all their nine (9) syllabuses.

The female candidates outperformed their male counterparts.

Performance at individual grades is as follows:

Merit –    16 (sixteen) candidates compared to eight (8) in 2023

Grade A – 613 candidates (1.45%) compared to the 440 (1.10%) candidates in 2023

Grade B – 4 790 candidates (11.32%) compared to 4 326 (10.50%) in 2023

Grade C – 10 899 candidates (25.76%) compared to 10 541 (25.50%) in 2023

Grade D – 14 458 candidates (34.18%) compared to 13 834 (33.50%) in 2023

Grade E – 5 410 candidates (12.79%) compared to 5 166 (12.50%) in the previous year

Ungraded –  6 107 (14.44%) candidates compared to 6 860 (16.60%) in 2023.

It should be noted that results for candidates who did not meet the requirement for grading have been denoted with the letter X. This is usually temporary and will be resolved within the enquiries about results’ period.

It is important to emphasise that these results are provisional for a period of six (6) weeks commencing today 4th February, 2025 until 18th March, 2025. Therefore, all enquiries about results for school candidates should be directed to the schools/centres and private candidates should forward their enquiries to BEC offices within the above stipulated period.

Distribution of results will be done as follows:

Distribution to Centres: Centres will be given access to the Malepa system.
Distribution to Regional Offices: Regional Offices will access the results through the Malepa system.
