Application Deadline: 27th October 2025
The School of Education (SoE) at the University of Malawi, through the Higher Education and Professional Development Department, is pleased to announce the call for applications for the inaugural enrolment into the newly established Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (PGCHET) Programme, to commence in January 2026.
Programme Overview
The SoE is an excellent, immensely experienced innovative leader in education studies and research in Malawi. As a locally and globally responsive leader in education studies, the SoE under its recently established Higher Education and Professional Development Department,
has introduced a new program targeted at capacitating those teaching in universities and colleges with knowledge, skills, and competencies for effective and transformative teaching at the tertiary education level.
More often, those teaching at the tertiary education level, indisputably have expertise in their areas of expertise. However, they usually lack the equally necessary complimentary knowledge, competences, and skills regarding teaching and learning foundations, teaching methodologies, principles of assessment, research supervision, and knowledge for the
execution of associated academic roles. This deficiency ultimately undermines optimum teaching and learning.
Why this Programme is Important for Malawians
Higher education institutions in Malawi and across Africa face increasing demand for qualified, skilled lecturers who can not only share knowledge but also guide students through modern, learner-centered teaching approaches. By enrolling in the PGCHET, participants respond to this demand and contribute to improving the quality of tertiary education in Malawi and beyond.
