Gambia Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Announces Mandatory Teacher Competency Assessment

Gambia Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education Announces Mandatory Teacher Competency Assessment. As part of the Gambia Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE’s) critical teacher quality assurance strategy designed to ensure that graduating teacher trainees possess the minimum professional knowledge, skills and attitudes required for effective teaching, the Ministry wishes to inform the public that, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will organise a Mandatory Teacher Competency Assessment (TCA) for all Pre-service and in service teacher trainees completing their Advanced Diploma Programs for Lower Basic School (LBS) from the University of Education, The Gambia (UEG), formally The Gambia College.

Following an orientation session on Friday, August 8th, the Teacher Competency Assessment will be held on Saturday, 9th August, 2025.

Venue: Brikama and Basse Campuses.
Time: 8:00 am.

While the Teacher Competency Assessment (TCA) is a mandatory requirement to ensuring that all Pre-service trained teachers meet the minimum professional performance benchmarks before they are deployed to schools, on the other hand, the Teacher Competency Assessment (TCA) for In-service trained teachers is solely intended to identify their individual or systematic challenges in preparation and classroom delivery.
This will enable the Ministry to design targeted interventions, such as induction, mentoring, or refresher training for continuous personal development.

As highlighted in our policy framework, the Ministry places a high premium on professional development, competency, accountability and effective teaching delivery in our schools.
As such, all Pre-service and In-service teacher trainees completing the current training cycle are strongly advised to take this exercise seriously and ensure full compliance with the scheduled date and procedures.

Failure to sit to the assessment without valid justifications may result to serious consequences including the possibility of NO REDEPLOYMENT back to the school system.
