28 000 Students Apply For HESLGB Loans Ahead Of Deadline

In todays latest HESLGB News – 28 000 Students Apply For HESLGB Loans Ahead Of Deadline – The Malawi Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) has received 28,000 1 loan applications for the 2025/26 academic year, with 14 days remaining before the application window closes.

HESLGB Executive Director Prince Phwetekere said the Board is encouraged by the current response but expects more students to apply before the 30th May 2025 deadline.

“We have received 28,000 applications so far, and with 14 days still to go before the application window closes, we expect the number to increase,” said Phwetekere.

He disclosed that the Board is targeting to support about 33,000 students in the 2025/26 loan cycle, up from 28,000 beneficiaries last year. The increase reflects the growing demand for financial support among tertiary students nationwide.

Phwetekere, however, warned that there will be no extension of the application period this year, unlike in previous cycles, and urged eligible applicants to submit their forms early to avoid missing out on the financial support.

“Every year, we see a rush during the final days of the window, which often causes system congestion. This year, we are reminding students to apply within the specified period, as no extensions will be granted,” he said.

He further advised all students to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria before submitting their applications to avoid disqualification.
The application process is conducted online through the Student Financing Management Information System (SFMIS) platform.

Applicants are reminded to submit key documents, including a valid National ID, a guardian’s National ID, a guarantor consent form, proof of non-refundable fee payment, and proof of admission from an accredited Higher Education Institution for newly selected students.
